asia and Europe are buying LNG off the spot market at record prices because there is no alternative that anyone globally has been able to come up power their economies in winter. They have invested hugely in fossil fuel powered infrastructure, and continue to invest in it. They want on demand energy in the middle of their winters, energy to allow their population to enjoy the same quality of life they have come to expect.

S and ESG stands for social, I'd argue providing a transportable energy product for countries that can't produce their own is a social responsibility until technology provides alternatives that can be scaled appropriately. Investing in the only tech currently available that might in the future solve this aka hydrogen is demonstrating the right thinking towards the future, but you can't move faster than your customers or the technology. There is no shortage of higher CO2 gas that would be developed if companies with lower CO2 gas say no.

The reality is that no company or country has worked out a solution to this that works for everyone. The alternative to natural gas is coal or blackouts for 99% of the developed world. The merger makes a company worth 40 Billion, about 2% of the size of Saudi Aramco, or about 0.2% of the fossil fuel energy sector. Energy is a huge commodity and finding a solution that can replace this sector of the global economy isn't easy. The collective minds of the industry haven't been able to solve this, the expectation that WPL + BHP are sitting on the answer but pissing into the wind is failing to understand just how difficult this is to solve.
