The natural flake has a rough surface & can bind well with silicon added to give a massive boost to battery anode performance.
Synthetic has a smoother surface, as seen under microscope, & dose not bind well to silicon added. This might result in battery failure or fires that are costly to EV manufacturers doing recalls. Many companies, including POSCO & BKT, have mentioned the benefits of blending both natural & synthetic graphite.
Most big battery manufacturers seem to follow a similar trend in development. Hence good quality natural graphite (e.g. BKT) has good growth potential for the next few years at least.
