Actually after thinking about it and looking a bit more, its possible that it could be a shadow, open pits are notoriously difficult to photograph in winter due to the position of the sun (especially steep south facing walls in the winter time), even though its NW QLD there still is a noticeable shadow on the south facing walls so its possible it might be a shadow effect rather than being full of water.
