Agree, except for this bit: "How often is a laser welder manufacturer going to replace their suppliers just because a slightly more refined laser is released that they then have to release an entirely new model for?"
While some manufacturers of welding, cutting and 3D printing machines may wish to explore the possibilities of novel form factors to improve functionality or simplify the installation of the laser diode, BLG can also supply standard form factors for simple retrofitting into a customer's existing installed base. This is probably our best chance for near-term sales revenue growth.
Also, BLG lasers are more than just "slightly more refined". The blue to green range of wavelengths are far better absorbed by many materials than are the currently used infrared wavelengths. By tailoring the wavelength to the material, the energy transfer efficiency can be several times greater than is currently achieved. This offers more than just savings on running costs. It will also permit greater precision, opening the door to next gen manufacturing processes that are not possible with infrared.
A further reason for the DoD to take an interest in the technology.
