You raise a very good point which would answer a few questions from others on why drill a vertical well first and not just launch into a horizontal !!
Firstly A1 was targeting the elephant down at depth, we mustn't forget this fact
The whole uppersheets were completely unexpected and not incorporated in the original Engineering design for A1
Due to this, logs across most of the well were unattainable due to bore degradation.
Without a good suite of logs you cannot plan and design the trajectory of a lateral well.
Lateral/horizontal drilled wells are guided (mostly off site now) by the Engineering departments (geos,res etc) they will follow the data gathered from the logs, technically they can keep the bit in better 1-2 meters of logged pay for kilometres.
This shouldn't be hard here as our nett pay is looking to be quite substantial in depth![]()
The crux is, without good logs and siesmic it'd be a risky endeavour drilling laterally
