If I may just add another thing to my earlier posting: Institutions placing size orders are much more likely to do so via an algorithm to, at the very least, achieve VWAP for the day. This will result in many small orders bought/sold at random times throughout the day that ultimately land at the total order size.
Or they may use ASX Centre Point, which is a 'dark market'.
Under both scenarios, people watching market depth will not know the total order size. Thus, if you can see size in the queue it is still very much likely to be retail orders.
