forgive me but I think you're oversimplifying a very complex problem. please read up on the complexities of drilling fluid chemistry when the geology is rather unfamiliar, complex in nature and at 4km depth with no 3D seismic guidance. add to that the suspected fracturing and vuggy nature of the source.
the drilling fluid/mud needs to achieve the desired rheological and functional properties by combining materials/components to play their roles on viscosity, gel strength, density and filtration specific to the GEOLOGY targeted.
Tell me what we knew conclusively about the temperature, pressure and geology of the Marti reservoir from 3800-3900m prior to drilling to inform the drilling engineer and mud engineer as to what was the desired composition?
it is a common GENERAL problem and each problem requires a very unique solution based on the specific circumstances and conditions.
I would welcome critical and insightful comments from any drilling and mud engineers please.
