The crux of the problem is that he/she does not actually hold a position (and does what is known as "paper trading": mimicking trading by writing down positions on a notepad instead of executing actual orders in the market). And because the position is a paper one, they sometimes forget whether they are bullish or bearish on any given stock. Quite an understandable mistake, in the circumstances.
TBH, sometimes I wish I had paper-traded some stocks (instead of taking real positions).
