Out of interest this deepwater horizon article is a good one explaining how dangerous it can get trying to balance a well. As Alexii mentioned A-1 could have easily been a blowout. That well was on the limit and seems Formation damage and resultant mud loss could have easily got out of hand in the cavernous reservoir.
