This doesn't affect Chullora to Glenfield, Campbelltown and Macarthur in Sydney's south as there's a separate Australian Rail Track Corporation freight line (though only single track), but it means that during these eight weekday hours, steel trains whether loaded or empty are normally banned from travelling through Hurstville and Wollongong.

Listed QUB took over this steel train contract from unlisted Pacific National on 1 January 2002.

The steel trains continue to operate but at times there've been significant delays.

QUB also operates steel trains from Port kembla up to Acacia Ridge in Brisbane: these have always managed to be timetabled outside the curfew times as they have to share the tracks with passenger trains all the way (with minor exceptions) from Unanderra through Sydney to Gosford, Broadmeadow, Maitland, Telerah and even Dungog NSW.

QUB's loaded steel trains are very heavy and do a great job in keeping Australian roads safer as they effectively substitute for what would otherwise be inefficient, large B-Double trucks on local roads and freeways. The video shows the first standard gauge Port Kembla to North Dynon (Melbourne) loaded train. QUB also hauls steel wagons on the broad gauge Frankston/Stony Point line in Melbourne's southeast to/from the BSL steelworks at Long Island near Hastings, Vic:

Great factual info. Is BSL able to supply any of the steel for the railway line's repair job? I'd love the IRONy of that!

It's also a little ironic that this company will seemingly benefit from paying taxes. The share price anyway. It's a strange world we live in.
