it appears the CSIRO has updated the GenCost report to include transmission, renewables are still cheaper.
Fair point, SA is a tiny fraction of the NEM, however I think it is a useful model for how it can be done in the rest of the country.
I have a feeling Labor will lose based on this as well.
I realise that Fukushima significantly slowed the building of new nuclear plants, but I am not talking about that. I do think it is as fair to blame the LibNats for floundering energy policy, as it is to blame Labor for the current state of affairs.
The delays I am referring to are if we were to start building a reactor today. While completely different technology, Snowy 2.0 I think provides for a relevant example, and we're not doing anything particularly ground breaking in Australia with that project. nuclear is entirely new to Australia. (i know we have one in Lucas heights).
I suspect we will go in circles all day on this, as such this will be my last comment on the topic as I do not want to derail the forum any more than I already have.
Thank you for the discussion.
Nuclear power plant build times. Both Japan and S. Korea have a history of on time and on budget projects.

I think it’s helpful to look at the population and industrial differences between SA and the rest of the east coast. Powering Adelaide/SA and the east coast of Oz are apples and oranges. I would say an almost impossible task to power a modern country with only wind/solar/battery combo, not to mention prohibitively expensive. Likely to see a large scale replication of natty gas power plants in the grid to keep the lights on. Essentially locking in natty gas use for decades to come.
Just playing devils advocate for a minute, but why even bother moving away from cheap, plentiful and once reliable coal power, when we mine so much of the stuff for the rest of the world that shutting down our coal power generation does NOTHING in terms of overall emissions reductions. I’m not saying coal power generation is good, just pointing out the obvious hypocrisy. You will screw your electricity grid, and you will screw your citizens with higher power prices, and your fat cat mates (I’m pointing at you Twiggy)will make bank with the infrastructure cash splash, which will come around again in 20 yrs when these wind/solar/battery projects reach the end of their productive lives.
Nuc power plants have a functional life of >80yrs (and possibly more) with correct upkeep and maintenance. The build time may be 10-15 years, but society will benefit from the steady, reliable and cheap power for generations. And yes the power is cheap when the costs are amortised over such a long period of time.
There is no net zero without nuclear. Wind and solar have a place in the energy mix but very short sighted of our pollies to be ignoring nuclear power generation. Quite pathetic that a rational energy policy is not a bipartisan issue imho.
Anyhoo… enjoy the weekend people, sorry for the rant. Just sick of useless gutless politicians for all sides.
