although we were all taught that words beginning with a vowel should be preceded by a vowel, thats not strictly true

oh course there are some words beginning with "h" like hotel that should, strictly be "an hotel" rather than "a hotel" but others like "health check" which we use "a" instead of "an"

and of course not even all words beginning with a vowel use "an" prior - think of "user" as an example.

all of which means that its the"vowel" sound that determines which indefinite article (an or a) precedes a word

thus because I used SP (rather than share price) and its sound is "ess pee" its a vowel sound and thus entitled to an indefinite article "an"
