I hope you are right. Reading the indictment, it seems that there was a bunch of people (the co-accused)who set up some system of autosubscribing US customers, well before Zhenya was brought in later. When their profits were waning they brought Zhenya in, who proceeded to sign up hundred of thousands of customers.
Now it is possible I suppose that Zhenya thought the guys he was dealing with, were on the level and he wasn't aware they were autosubscribing customers (he just thought they were good at getting business). The payments to offshore companies, again might have just been seen as a business practice, one I'm sure many businesses do when dealing with foreign companies.
I hope that this is the case, as he was portrayed as an Aussie success story and I do know he gave a lot back in advice and time to young entrepreneurs.
