I never thought I would find myself buying SBM shares but here we are again at the depths of despair and you can pick up $0.30 of Net Financial Assets at close to $0.20 a share and get 6 Moz of gold at a resource level, effectively for free! SBM paid A$780m for the Atlantic Gold operation just 4 years ago. I was a shareholder in Atlantic around that time and could not believe what they paid for it. It was madness.
A look back at the share price over the last 20 years finds SBM in a crisis of confidence twice before at similar share price levels. Once sentiment in the sector turned favourable, so did the share price, despite management's incompetence.
Will this time be different? Only time will tell. At this juncture the risk verses reward looks appealing for mine.
