Most pilots were expats and travelled in and out of the country. I understood that the law at that time did not allow gold to leave the country without a licence or permit. I was told of someone who had a nugget made into a pendant and tried to leave the country with it around his neck and things didn't go well for him..... Gold has a signature and can be tested to determine where it comes from and isn't always easy to exchange for cash. A very regulated resource.....
