A put is a short and a call is a long. Hmm...
You do realise it depends on whose shoes you stand in right?
If I write a put option I am in fact long, not short. I benefit from the market increasing as the option will not be exercised and I pocket the fee.
If I purchase a put option I am short. As I benefit from the stock decreasing.
The inverse relates to calls.
