theres alot of articles on drilling through clay in wells, additives used to help stabilize it while drilling, so clay is intersected alot. But i haven't seen anything to say it's a negative in a potential gas field. There was one major downfall of clay and that was if drilled incorrectly, the clay particles from drilling can mess up the pirosity and render the well useless. I don't know how often that happens.
