Perhaps I'm becoming jaded, but "...they are going to keep working on finding the next best candidate" has been the fundamental story for the last 5+ years. Who's to say this is any different now, i.e. with no deals? They could keep doing this forever. A perceptual lab experiment - but, with no CSO to lead them.
