    There is no real easy answer to that question sorry, its all about how bad the stripping ratio is before the cost of removing all the waste overwhelms the value of the orebody extracted. As a rough rule of thumb, (and this is very anecdotal and has lots of caveats), open pit gold mines in Australia typically can go for 150-200m or maybe 250m deep at a stretch before underground mining from near the base of the pit starts to become more economically more effective/attractive. Obviously there are some very large and/or high grade orebodies that can justify deeper open pits than that (e.g. The Superpit in Kalgoorlie) and geo-technical limitations of how steep pit wall angles can be, will play a big part in this equation.
