Honesty I think this time will be similar. Gov's aren't really leading the way here, it started on the fringe and is becoming more mainstream.
the interesting thing is this:
1) solar currently requires vast tracts of land
2) wind also requires clearing
3) nuclear is (imo) infinitely worse than petroleum
Hydrogen is very interesting but green hydrogen requires water (replacing current petroleum production with wholesale hydrogen production out of water reserves would be problematic). Hydrogen from offshore petroleum via a FPSO with carbon gas pumped back into the well is sexy as hell!
thing is! Electricity consumption is forecast to grow exponentially, this production can not exclude petroleum. sure O&G is a pariah atm, but it's unlikely to disappear anytime soon. although I do believe significant change is coming
