This is not a business for Elon Musk. This is an expensive experiment, one which will fail substantially in my opinion. This not only is a "Wifi anywhere" product but the company is not expecting to make a cent from the satellite outlay in 5 years.
Not to mention the many hurdles in obtaining licensing to supply satellite internet in various regions. SSG will completely undercut all of this mess through focusing on voice and messaging services.
Statements from the article: "If all goes to plan the satellites could be in orbit and the Internet operational within five years" and "The initial cost of the satellite network will be difficult to recover." SSG by that time can have a complete operational constellation.
Management have a deep track record of the aerospace industry. I agree this is a speculative investment but do not underestimate its potential.
