Preventing sand from the formation to enter the well, in order to:
- prevent sand from the formation damaging the extraction equipment (valves, etc.)
- prevent sand from clogging up the well
- prevent formation damage from cavities forming (left behind by the mobilised sand)
typically a gravel packer is installed and the pipe seems to have gotten stuck in this
