I agree they probably don't know, but they're providing a date for restless shareholders makes them look like "they're making stuff up". There's other words I could use. Some synonyms: fabricate, concoct, manufacture, devise, cook up.
I'd personally prefer they say they don't know rather than trot out the "imminent" chestnut or worse state weeks away like they did a couple of months ago. They said it and I immediately thought no way (while hoping I was wrong in a back corner of my mind)
