It’s official!
As of July 1, any GP in Tasmania can prescribe medicinal cannabis. It will take some time for GPs to learn the process, but the program will enable patients to have approval for the prescription within 48 hours.
This is a game-changing move for those seeking access to medicinal cannabis, previously only accessible through the black market.
Not only that, but Tasmania is the only jurisdiction in Australia that has a legal medical defence for prescribed medication, including medicinal cannabis. This sets a valuable precedent for the future of drug driving policy in Australia.
But while Tasmanians enjoy legal access and driving defence, patients on the mainland still face criminal charges for testing positive for the presence of THC even when not impaired.
