Your comments on gold shares have me thinking though. I would agree that gold mining shares would initially crash in the wake of a general market crash, but I have always thought they would climb back up as time went on as long as gold held or rose in value.

I do mean shares of gold producers as opposed to exploration, greenfields etc.

For example I have recently (Feb) diversified some of my funds into EVN. A producing, low cost Australian operator with a franked dividend.

Do you not think that shares in a company like this are a good alternative egg in the basket?

agree 100% with your comment, we saw exactly this in march. SAR crashed along with the market, but that proved to be one of the best buying opportunities we have had in a long time.

as it recovered and then some to new highs much quicker then the general market. i suspect due to a lot of the funds people had on hand from selling shares moved to gold stocks for some safety.

i believe we had another such oppujust last week, not on the same scale as before at all,but i believe that flash crash was another buying opportunity.
if it happens again i will improve my position as i have done the past two times. untill then this is a strong hold for me.

i hold gold physical also, but i believe it important to diversify with gold mining exposure.
