CCP seem to be increasingly moving toward exclusive use of Sigfox as a network. So we have a startup tech company using first-generation network tech and infrastructure from a startup tech company. What could go wrong?
I don't see what the benefit is of "A stand-alone solution which is not reliant on local telco networks". As a customer, if you asked me to invest in this kind of technology I'd be much more comfortable that the telco networks (operating technologies and business models that have been proven over ~30 years) were going to remain supported and operational long term than some new startup technology (Sigfox) operated by a startup network operator (e.g. Thinxtra).
It appears to me that, by putting a lot (all?) of their eggs in the Sigfox basket, these guys are ignoring the real risk that Sigfox will not prove viable in the long-term. Reading about this on the web, it seems to be commonly accepted by those in the know that only a select few, if any, of the non-cellular LP-WAN standards that have evolved in the last couple of years (of which Sigfox is just one of many) will have any long term future. So what happens to CPP and their business model and customers if they prove to have backed the wrong horse? I'm sure there's ways to deliver "A long-lasting battery-powered solution which is capable of uninterrupted operation even during power failures" without risking it on reliance on startup technologies delivered by third parties.
I've been reading up on the web and it seems cellular networks are now also doing LP-WAN networks - and from what I've read they'll have the same benefits of non-cellular LP-WANs like Sigfox (or any of the many others like Ingenu, Lora, Weightless etc) such as cheap hardware, long range, long battery life. Except they use open standards (= no technology lock-in), be offered by multiple network operators (= competitive pricing guaranteed), and come with the peace of mind that they have been developed and delivered by established business with proven business models (i.e. peace of mind that they'll still be there a few years into your 5-10 year battery life).
