Most (honest) patent examiners will tell you patents are essentially worthless to small companies. The average patent defence in US courts takes five years and costs USD3 million.
in the real world (not the HC fantasy world) patent portfolios (not individual patents) owned by huge corporations are what counts. The corporations simply use their vast resources and lawfare to exhaust smaller competitiors
