There is an interesting story regarding the loss of cargo ships in the 18th century from Lloyds of London. in the late 1800's when materials and machinery were being exchanged between England and their colonies, there existed a huge pollution problem in the cities because of the enormous amount of horse shit in the streets. The solution was to use this as fertiliser for the colonies and as ballast in the ship holds. Lloyds were very concerned about the unexplained loss of ships at sea. When they investigated the issue they concluded that it was the horse manure stored low in the ships' holds, that got wet, fermented, producing methane and when one of the sailors went below to check the cargo with his lantern, he and the rest of the crew got a nasty surprise. solution to the problem was to label the bags Store High In Transit, or S.H.I.T
