If they have a bunch of shares on borrow (which seems to be the case), if they do short sell those shares, surely the formal ownership transfers to the buyer..?
So, this could simply be MS selling some of their borrowed shares (shorting), which makes sense considering the lack of sense that the SP movement has at the moment!!??
As long as they are the instigators of a drop in share price, and they can buy back for an average price lower than their average sell price, they get ahead. If they can cause/force some real additional sell volume (i.e. triggering multiple stop losses), then they can also start to buy extras (more than they need to repay the lenders) to accumulate parcels for themselves at "artificially reduced" prices.
Same happens in reverse - start to push the price higher, punters/others join in the buying, then sell out with a higher average sell price than buy price, and they're ahead.
Rinse, repeat, rinse repeat. We are just along for the ride...
Money makes money, no?!
