The said company may not be shorting directly. For example a company may buy the shares then lend those said shares to an “associated entity” that shorts the shares. If one does not dig deeper then a link to the main entity can not be directly seen. In this way they are able to run a long-short structure unbeknown to holders who run a cursory glance through short lists.
