    Three things come to mind as to why some (certainly not all) selling is taking place with institutions...

    1/ There are massive redemptions taking place with mutual / hedge funds, particularly in the US. Funds are forced to sell under-performing stocks to meet withdrawal demands.
    2/ Removal from ASX 200 - some funds may have a mandate to only invest in indexed stocks
    3/ Tax loss selling before 31 Dec in USA.
