Agree about shorting - the BS used to justify it of it increases liquidity is just dishonest. Whatever happened to the good old options for that sort of thing? Shorting is market manipulation plain and simple and should 1 - have to be disclosed as a short seller transaction and 2 reveal the extent of the short postion that person still has.
