Mining services magnate Dale Elphinstone is Tasmania's first billionaire, according to the Financial Review Rich List research team, after profits surged at his Burnie-based empire, which distributes and services earthmovers, trucks and engines.
Mr Elphinstone is ranked 116th on the 2019 list with an $814 million fortune. A booming bottom line means just one of his many interests – William Adams Pty Ltd, named for the Caterpillar dealership where he started as an apprentice diesel mechanic at 15 in 1966 and which he bought outright in 1987 – is worth more than $1 billion itself on one valuation metric.
