With regard to nominee accounts, they are also commonly used if you buy shares within an industry fund super account. In that situation, your shares may be lent out for shorting without any involvement or knowledge by you because the shares are held by a custodian. Also, you lose any entitlement to vote those shares for or against AGM motions for example. You only get to vote them in issues such as a takeover or wind-up. The upside is the tax advantage of being held within super.
Regardless, all my Weebit shares are held directly and I can be assured that they are not available for shorting. I hold them very tightly and I may have missed out on transient opportunities to trade in and out for profit, but I certainly will not miss the future large gains when more and more customers and fabs come aboard.
