2. In May 2018, Philip G. Alston, special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights for the U.N., published a report saying 40 million Americans live in poverty and 18.5 million Americans live in extreme poverty.
3. The United States has the world's largest trade deficit. The deficit in goods and services was $621 billion in 2018.
4. The U.S. health care system is the most inefficient in the world: The US spends twice as much per person on health care as other advanced countries, but have worse health outcomes, including a lower life expectancy. The government, through programs like Medicare and Medicaid, pays for approximately half of the country's health care, almost all of which is actually provided by the private sector.
