why would a man who has all the money he needs lose sleep?
He is not playing a money game as such. Just an ego game. The money is a consequence of that. Right now he is under water. If he can launch a take over at 10 cents for argument sake this will cause a bidding war. He will either reject or accept. In the mean time he has made money or broken even. Either way he wins.
We on the other hand have limited funds. The focus is different.
