There could be a variety of reasons - perhaps his South American problem is not cleared up and it is coming to a head, he got a better job offer or the negotiations are not going well and he is jumping ship.
In the absence of knowing exactly the motivation it is a concern. He did far more than BB in a short space of time in terms of the revised strategy, getting the CR away and geting some collaborative partnership discussions underway.
He had a good CV - it will be interesting to see the quality of CEO they get as a replacement.
