An older, established subcritical coal-fired power station would have a thermal efficiency in the region of 30%. I seem to recall brown coal generators, like Hazelwood, may have even been below that figure, but around 30% is their general level of efficiency.
A new supercritical coal plant is about 42% efficient and an ultra supercritical coal plant is about 44% efficient.
I shake my head when I hear inaccurate information like yours above being bandied about by armchair experts.
These efficiencies are actually quite hard to find on the web. I imagine the fossil fuel industry doesn't like talking about them. I looked them up earlier in the year when the federal Coalition started banging on about 'clean coal', and they were hard to find then, but Reneweconomy has recently published them in an article...
