Charging station to offer free power

An electric vehicle charging station has been installed in Adelaide, offering electric car owners free power.

The station has been installed at Adelaide's Central Market car park and can handle two cars at a time.

Adelaide Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the station was powered by an Australian-developed fuel cell in what was believed to be a world first.

The fuel cell allows drivers to recharge electric vehicles with power produced with low emissions.

"This project is a sign of things to come as we move towards a cleaner and greener future for our beautiful city," Mr Yarwood said.

The ChargePoint recharging station can produce 12,400 kilowatt hours of power each year.

Excess electricity not used by motorists will be fed into South Australia's power grid.

    Electric dreams

Meanwhile, Adelaide?s Central Market has come up with what is being claimed as a world first ? free electric vehicle charging stations that are powered by an Australian-made fuel cell. The two charging stations to be operated by ChargePoint will use power supplied by low emission energy provide Ceramic Fuel Cells BlueGen units and will be located in the car park of the shopping centre.

The installations take the number of stations operated by ChargePoint in Australia to 16, helping to cater for the around 100 or so mass produced EVs currently in the country, and the several hundred vehicles that have been converted to electric only by their owners. There are only a few dozon in South Australia. ChargePoint CEO James Brown reckons the number of stations will grow steadily over time, but says the Central Market installations are an important step towards seeing EVs as a common fixture on the roads.
