Hotdiggity, you are probably right, renewables misght be a good investment, but not economically of socially because bad or mal-investments mean money is wasted/diverted for elsewhere. Hospitals, education, roads,.

Don't delude yourself that renewables are cheap. If climate change is factored in, assuming there is no WWIII in the interim, and if all countries do the same thing then economic relativity remains, except the proportion of peoples lives and effort disappears into buying power rather than other important purchases/investments.

Imagine you have a perfectly good lounge room. Council disagrees and demand you buils another with triple glazing, bulk insulation, a heat storage unit,....

Its still a lounge room. The utility hasn't changed. Yet probaby three times the asset value has been spent, and Gross, the same utility has cost you 4x (3 + the original you already had). So something somewhere has to give.

Its still an open question whether you saved the planet if the unemployment, loss of opportunity in education etc leads to social disruption and a mob turns uop at your front door looking for hand outs. On the other hand, maybe you didn't do enough. How much is enough and who is bearing it? Certainly not the 50% of people who get some form of Government hand out.
