The sentence you highlighted in your post was from the August 2014 announcement. With re to Fragile X, no, you're not barking up the wrong tree. Remember, if Trofinetide and NNZ-2591 have the same mechanisms of action, NNZ-2591 could potentially be used to treat the same indications for which Trofinetide is being developed OR new indications.
