The palaeomagnetic record for the last 3.2 Ma indicates an average spreading rate for the Red Sea approximately 20mm pa. The rift extends down the length of the Red Sea, stretching from the southern end of the Dead Sea junction to a triple junction with the Aden Ridge and the East African Rift in the Afar Depression of eastern Africa. Interestingly, the axial deep of the Red Sea rift was in fact the first location by a number of early sub-mariner explorers that confirmed the presence of hot, 60°C, saline brines and associated metalliferous muds, emanating from an active sub-seafloor rift.
