SurferStu,
I had the same initial reaction or hope as you in relation to Weiss, but I’ll think you find there are two different Weiss groups.
The Weiss chasing a stake in Perpetual is Gary Weiss.
More on him here http://www.theaustralian.com.au/archive/business-old/brierley-passes-baton-to-weiss-at-gpg/story-e6frg96f-1225880634569
The Weiss building a stake in SBL is Andrew Weiss and it’s his name and company address that are all over the Change in Substantial Shareholding notice lodged today.
Some basic info on the Andrew Weiss …

and https://www.weissasset.com/
and https://careers.weissasset.com/focus
The principal goal of our firm is to maximize the risk-adjusted return of our portfolio. While the value from any particular component of our portfolio may fall in a given year, we strive to create a balanced collection of investments and hedges that will yield consistently high risk-adjusted returns.
And https://careers.weissasset.com/approach
We view investment decisions as homework problems. We try to get the best answer to the problem within the time constraints imposed by markets. We also try to anticipate possible investment opportunities so we will have done our homework and are ready to immediately calculate the risk-adjusted return on the investment at the price at which we are being offered the security.
Anyway, Andrew Weiss sounds very well qualified, so hopefully we’ll learn his intentions soon.
