Victoria’s security industry is facing a drastic workforce shortage which experts say could hit the major events sector in coming months.
Insiders have told the Herald Sun the issue is being compounded by long delays in the granting of licences, which are discouraging newcomers.It now takes up to three months for a new security licence to be processed by the state’s Licensing and Regulation Division.
The shortage is so bad firms have offered sign-on incentives of up to $1500 for established officers to jump ship from rival companies and join.Industry sources say the ability of major events to meet requirements could be threatened if the situation continues.
The Australian Security Industry Association Ltd said security personnel numbers were down 10,000 to 15,000 nationwide, 10 per cent below required capacity.
