Maybe they're just a poor judge at picking investments. I'm no expert on short selling, but I can't see how they are making money buying high and selling low. Maybe they're buying options to buy back the ones they're selling? Who knows?
I am assuming their intent is to make money, and they aren't just using their poorly performing assets as a tax write off.
