Difficult to disentangle. The last shortman report shows net shorts, as of last Friday, at 2.79%. On last Friday there was a net increase of 0.01%, the gross short sales for each day of this week have shown 0.01 to 0.017% increase per day, so you would expect the current net short positions to about 2.9% for today (have to wait till next week) -- so short positions have increased over this week. No doubt ST and JPM are facilitating some of this, as well as some local brokers and funds jumping on the band wagon.
