I understand what you're saying and I agree that no firm has a perfect record.
My opinion is in professional services (especially in audit) you tend to get what you pay for more often than not.
In my current role we use EY, my previous job we went from from mid-tier to EY (After getting poor advice from the auditor which resulted in an ASIC review and being forced to restate three year worth of financials).
I'm an ex-auditor, worked for for both second tier and mid tier firms, should have gone big 4 from Uni if I'm honest.
