re: Ann: Change of Directors Interest Notice ... I was just reading in The Age that Leighton have started pumping water through the desal plant and that it should be finished later this year, so it looks as though STS troubles with this venture is nearing an end:

The first large-scale production of drinking water has started at Leighton Holdings' troubled Victorian desalination plant.

The construction giant on Monday said the plant had successfully produced drinking water over the past seven days, during the first phase of its testing process.

The desalination plant and the company's Brisbane Airport Link toll road were the main reasons the company in March downgraded its profit forecast by $256 million.

The desalination plant, which will be the largest in the country, was responsible for $106 million of the writedown.

Leighton Holdings chief executive Hamish Tyrwhitt called the first water production a significant milestone.

"We are now operating at around 33 per cent of the plant's capacity," he said.

Leighton said it expected the plant would be completed later this year.

Mr Tyrwhitt previously has said that while the plant and Brisbane Airport Link had had a considerable impact on Leighton they are among the most complex engineering projects undertaken in the country.
