An NT News audit of job creating projects shows that down the track the sheer volume of projects guarantees our population will bounce back.

The Territory’s mining sector, which is widely recognised as most likely to spearhead the Territory’s economic recovery, has more than $5 billion in wealth generating projects on its books alone.

There are more than a dozen significant and major projects with the potential to create countless thousands of jobs.

None-the-least of these is the Beetaloo Basin, around 500 kilometres southeast of Darwin in the Sturt Plateau region, between Mataranka to the north and Elliott to the south, where onshore gas carries the promise of around 6,000 new jobs, new industries and billions of dollars of investment. In just the early stages of exploration some $200 million has already been spent.

Arafura Resources Nolan’s Rare Earths mine project represents a potential $1.1 billion investment with more than 400 jobs created.

TNG’s $850 million Mount Peake Iron-Vanadium-Titanium project is said to carry 500 jobs during mine construction and more than 200 jobs during operation of the mine, plus another 1,200 jobs during construction and 400 jobs during operation of the refinery.

Vista Gold Corporation’s Mount Todd Gold project has an estimated total project cost of $839m.

It has around 450 construction phase jobs and approximately 350 operational jobs.

The $100 million Core Lithium Finnis project near Darwin will have 100 jobs if it gets off the ground as will the $10 million Frances Creek CSIRO environmentally friendly gold mining plant.

The world’s largest solar farm that is proposed near Tennant Creek is worth an $12.5 billion and will create 1,000 jobs in Darwin during the construction phase. Once operational there will be 300 jobs.

Much has already been written about the exciting $1.5 billion Project Sea Dragon prawn farming aquaculture project. This has 1500 projected jobs.

And of course the $400m East Arm ship lift has featured prominantly these past few days with the Chief Minister’s announcement the government will built it with or without federal funds. Around 100 jobs will be created during construction and it is predicted to generate 400 direct and indirect jobs in the future.
