I know individuals who are far wealthier (in material terms) than me, but to my constant surprise they decline to spend any time to even slightly research companies and rely instead on expensive 'private client advisers'.

Better to humbly devote a few hours and endeavour to discover listed companies that most analysts decline to cover because of small numbers of holders, perceived illiquidity and/or a high percentage of shares held by a small number of parties.
